Health and Environmental Effects of Microplastics

Microplastics have increasingly been in the news. The production of plastics has been
skyrocketing in recent years and is expected to triple by 2060. After use, plastics do not
biodegrade – they just break down into smaller particles called microplastics that
contain all the chemicals used to make plastic. These particles are found in air, soil,
and water.
Microplastics get into the human body and have been found in virtually every body
system that has been tested: skin, eyes, brain, blood, blood vessels, heart, lungs,
intestines, liver, kidneys, urine, feces, reproductive tracts, placentas, amniotic fluid,
breastmilk, and infant feces. They have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack,
stroke, and dementia and are suspected to contribute to many other adverse health
conditions.
Recycling is not the answer – less than 10% of plastics are recycled and this is not
expected to increase. It is unlikely that governments or fossil fuel companies will take
effective action in the near future, but there are many ways individuals and local
businesses can reduce their exposure to plastics.
This talk will provide information about the adverse health effects of plastic and
practical ways to reduce exposure.
Participants will be asked to break into these groups:
 What information is most helpful to you in coaching others on the impact of
microplastics?
 What do you think are the main points to be made as a coach regarding
microplastics?
 Have you ever brought up the idea of using less plastic with others, either as a
coach or in your daily life? If so, what went well and what was difficult? If not,
what would make this conversation easier to start?

Experiencing being an ancestor

In this partly experiential workshop we shall experiment with “the seventh generation exercise” one of the tools from “The work that reconnects” from our ancestor Joanna Macy.
We shall alternate roles, between an ancestor meeting a great-great-great grand child 200 years from now and the child. We shall reflect together on our feelings during the exercise and on the legacy we would like to leave behind/receive with gratitude.
The exercise will be integrated in the 2026 version of “Miniatures of evolution” a series of webinars online for transformative learning in the ecological. The workshop will also launch the next edition of the learning program.

Collapse-aware coaching: making meaning from metacrisis

Have you noticed the terms “collapse” and “metacrisis” becoming more widespread? What do they bring up in you? What might they actually mean as terms – and what might they mean for you, your clients, your coaching practice and the wider ecosystem?

In this session, we’ll explore some key themes and narratives emerging in public and private, and draw on both intellectual enquiry and guided mindful compassionate somatic practices. We aim to offer a space to help you to make some kind of sense of collapse, to be with and begin to metabolize the emotions – conscious and unconscious – that can arise, and to consider how we can make meaning from these extraordinary times in our lives, including our coaching work. We hope that this can be an opportunity to respond with care, in kinder and wiser ways to our predicament than if we turn away in disavowal; but none of us can do so alone. The Lighter Side of Climate: Integrating coaching conversations with joy, creativity and a sense of play

Many of our clients come to us with a deep sense of concern, overwhelm, grief or anxiety about our changing climate. Clearly, this is a serious topic, for us and for them, and we naturally want to do our best to support them through their process – both for their own sense of well-being, as well as for the wider world. It can often be challenging, however, to know how to support them. Is listening enough? Do we share resources, actions, or our own perspective on the issue? While there is no one right way, the default approach is often to match their tone, staying in that sense of seriousness and concern, steeped in a sense of gloom and doom. But what if we took a more playful approach? It might seem counter-intuitive, but integrating a lighter, less serious approach from time to time has numerous benefits for mental health and moving climate and sustainability work forward.

This highly interactive workshop, including small and larger group discussion and exploration, is designed less like a game of Trivial Pursuit and more like a trampoline. We’ll discuss some of the science behind playfulness and offer examples of playfulness in service of coaching and mental health, but really we’ll be using this workshop as a launchpad to explore what a more playful path could look like within the context of coaching. This might include reimagining our own relationship to climate change, and considering how we show up as coach in our conversations in general. Do we hold certain beliefs that keep us from being able to create a sense of lightness, joy or playfulness for Serious Business?

Workshop Goals:

Explore the basics of play theory (for adults!) and playful mindsets
Articulate the rationale for including playful approaches into our coaching conversations
Build community with others interested in a more playful approach to teaching
Reflect on and explore opportunities to add a bit more playfulness into your coaching
