How long is our story, really?

A Deep Time Walk is not just a walk. It is a journey through 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history in 4.6 kilometers — where every step represents one million years. As we walk together, slowing down, pausing, and noticing, questions begin to emerge:

Where am I in this vast story of Earth?
What am I truly connected to?
What choices am I making now?

Deep Time Walk is an immersive experience developed by ecologist Stephan Harding. It invites participants to walk 4.6 km as a way of journeying through the Earth’s 4.6 billion-year history, bringing a sense of deep time into embodied awareness. Rooted in systems thinking and a living Earth perspective, the walk helps us reconnect with the more-than-human world. Rather than simply learning about Earth’s history, it offers a felt experience of our place within it. https://www.deeptimewalk.org/

On April 25, we will gather at Yeouido Park for a guided Deep Time Walk. This experience invites you to step out of everyday time and into deep time — to reconnect with the living Earth, and to rediscover your place within it.

This is not a lecture. It is a shared, embodied journey through time, space, and story. Deep Time Walk reminds us: We are not separate from nature — we are part of it.  And once we truly feel that, something begins to shift.

In this journey, you will be guided by Soojin Kim in Korean exploring 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history.

Have you ever walked through 4.6 billion years?

Imagine each step carrying you back to when Earth was newly born, when the first life stirred in the oceans, and when humans began to shape history.

This is the essence of a Deep Time Walk (DTW): an invitation to slow down, walk gently, and experience Earth’s vast story with your own footsteps. It is not a journey across space, but across time. Not ordinary time, but Deep Time. Over the course of 4.6 kilometers, we will traverse 4.6 billion years of Earth’s history, rediscovering the resilience and interconnectedness that has always sustained life.

This experience is a transformative program developed by Dr. Stephan Harding and his colleagues at Schumacher College (www.deeptimewalk.org).

Notes for Participants:

Well-Being : If you are feeling unwell, please honour your body and care for yourself in the way you need.
Weather : Nature may greet us with sudden rain or shifting skies. We encourage you to come prepared with a light poncho or an umbrella, and a hat for sun protection.

You will hear how and why they have taken action and what inspires them to continue, and how leading businesses are taking action on the climate emergency.  There will be opportunity for Q &A and discussion.

Host Bios

Fiona Ellis

Fiona is a Director and co -founder of Business Declares, which was launched in September 2019 with John Elkington, Ben Tolhurst and Kate Sandle. She has 30 years background in business and leadership consulting and coaching with a range of corporates working globally and is passionate about business taking action on the climate and ecological emergency. Business Declares is a not for profit organisation, which acts as a critical friend to organisations who are seeking to change their business models and take positive steps to address this current environmental crisis.

Ben Tolhurst

Head of UK Managed Services, JLL

Ben leads the property and asset management business for JLL in the UK. His background spans 27 years in the outsource sector and he has worked across a number of industries including government, energy and utilities, telco and property. He is passionate about addressing the climate emergency and has made some far reaching changes in his personal and professional life. He is also a Director of ‘Business Declares’, a not for profit organisation which acts as a critical friend to organisations who are seeking to change their business models and take positive steps to address this current environmental crisis.

Samantha Cooper

Samantha had a twenty year career at BP as an oil trader, leading the Global Petrochemical Feedstock Trading book and on the executive team running the Global Light Ends business. She chose to leave BP in 2015 to pursue a more fulfilling path using her corporate experiences to help  organisations with social impact and the hugely challenging low carbon transition. Samantha is on the advisory board of Business Declares, Chaired the Development Board at The Young Women’s Trust, an associate at Koreo a consultancy mobilising talent for social change, works with Great Dixter Charitable Trust on sustainability, Impact Hub Network on strategic partnerships. Fellow at CUSP (Centre for Understanding Sustainable Prosperity) M.Chem from Oxford University
