Political Pod – Shaping Tomorrow Book Circle. Step 2: Grasping Climate Politics
In our second Book Circle on Thursday 8 May Lydia Stevens will be coaching Kat Haber about the challenges of the US leadership in relation to climate politics 100 days after Mr Trump was elected. Kat will outline the context she is facing in the US which sets the scene for the “5Ds” framework to demonstrate coaching. Kat asked to be coached on: “How do I maintain focus when the five Ds are in my face?”.
You will be put into pairs for co-coaching using the 5Ds framework in breakout rooms.
Please prepare by reading Shaping Tomorrow: A Playbook for Coaching Leaders in Sustainable Decision-Making and Policy
Step 2: Grasping Climate Politics (pages 27-43)
Please watch a 15 minute video by Per Espen Stoknes TED Global Conference, September 2017 before the session
“How to transform apocalypse fatigue into action on global warming” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F5h6ynoq8uM
The section of the Playbook most relevant is DISCOURSE OF DELAY (pages 40 & 41)
The five common internal defence mechanisms are known as the “5 Ds”: Distance, Doom, Dissonance, Denial and iDentity. Collectively these create a formidable barrier that rational arguments alone cannot penetrate. Coaches and change agents can skilfully guide clients around these obstacles, fostering constructive dialogue and action.
When: 8th May 08.30-10.00am UK [0930 CST, 1700 ACST, 1730 AEST) [Hawaii 21.30-23.00]

Presenter(s) Bio
Kat Haber is a pioneering climate coach who has organized TEDxVail for 16 years, demonstrating her long-term commitment to fostering important conversations about sustainability and innovation. In 2014, she walking across the country to raise awareness about climate issues in the Great March for Climate Action. Simultaneously she founded the WE Rotary Club of International Peace. Her global impact includes participation in the Global Summit for 750 Local Leaders at COP21 in 2015, where she engaged with 200 Chinese mayors who had already completed their first five-year plans for climate solutions in their cities.
Kat divides her time between four meaningful locations: Vail, Colorado for winter skiing where she asks directed climate-related questions to most of the people with whom she rides the chairlift; Waikoloa on Hawaii's Big Island where her son's family and her husband reside; Homer, Alaska where she convenes the Elders Council of the Center for Alaskan Coastal Studies; and her birthplace of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, which recently delivered a significant electoral defeat to Elon Musk despite his $25 million investment in that Supreme Court race. For the past five years she has been studying online event production and engaging in weekly 2-hour conversations with global TEDx organizers from Australia, Europe, and the Americas. Clarifying the most effective method of activating and sustaining climate action to speed and scale is her daily delight. She invites you online to her 4th Climate Staycation September 25-27.
