A conversation with Green Software Champion Anita Schüttler about Sustainable IT and AI, hosted by Katarzyna Schubert-Panecka.

AI is here to stay. However, along with its huge potential comes a host of environmental risks.

As always, awareness should be the basis for well-informed political decisions. Awareness that takes into account nature as well as the best interests of current and future generations.

In this session, Anita will

⛳︎ give a short overview of the ecological problems AI causes

⛳︎ sketch out ways to alleviate these problems while keeping the technology’s potential intact

⛳︎ and be available for a good discussion with attendees afterwards. Afterwards we will discuss the topic and look for possibilities, how to implement the insights in our work as climate coaches, change agents or politicians.

Please join us at 12th of March at 8.30 GMT and learn with us how to address the topic while coaching or doing political work.

Presenter(s) Bio

Anita Schüttler is a computer scientist by training. At neuland, a software company in Bremen, she worked as a programmer on building large scale software systems for over a decade. About four years ago, she stopped programming and switched her focus to sustainability: her first step was a 7-weeks masterclass on the Circular Economy at the University of Exeter in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation. She then founded a fulltime sustainability team together with a colleague and started working on the topic of sustainability in e-commerce. Later the same year, Anita stumbled upon Green Coding and knew: this is the right topic for her, perfectly combining her IT background and sustainability focus.

Fast forward four years, Anita is now neuland's Head of IT Sustainability and a Co-Chair for the German Green Software Association which neuland co-founded together with other companies in 2024. She actively works on advancing the topic of IT sustainability within her company and the wider IT industry, collaborating with others within Germany and across Europe. As a frequent speaker on various topics around sustainability in IT, Anita is a Champion of the Green Software Foundation.

Anita is also an auditor for the "Blue Angel for Software", the eco label of the German Environmental Agency. As such she has led HOLMES, one of neuland's softwares, to certification, as the fourth software to be certified so far.

Dr Katarzyna Schubert-Panecka: Katarzyna is an experienced international Business and Environmental Mediator (DACH | KNE) | (internationally certified) Mediator, Mediation Trainer and Supervisor (DACH), Executive, Climate and Team Coach (ICF | EMCC) | university teacher and mediation researcher regarding cross cultural understanding and cooperation.

Katarzyna says about her: „I was born to mediate” as a fellow mediator made me clear about this many years ago. Consequently and since 2008 I’ve been working as described. Apart from that I’m a co-founder and chairwoman of the Researcher Group for Mediation, the same in the International Network of Elder Mediation, and member of the editor’s board of the journal “Perspektive Mediation”. The Climate Coach Alliance is another great community in which I hope to support others in the field. Not only because I’m passionate about nature and climate, but because I see the necessity to adjust our way of thinking and behaving to the current challenges. Climate business coaching enables leaders and their organisations to become more congruent in their leadership, their business strategy and in their impact on a sustainable business culture beyond legal requirements. In all these roles I love to work with leaders and teams who are willing to personally develop, to really make time for this and do it long term and sustainable. Executives and leaders, change makers, who take whatever it takes to change, willing to leave their comfort zone and take a fresh perspective and widen your horizon, appreciative honesty, people who want to look on a macro level, taking a broad systemic perspective have the most fun while working with me.
