Climate Outreach: “Re-writing the Climate Story”

308 308 people viewed this event.

A conversation with Rachel Orr, CEO of Climate Outreach, a charity which was formed 20 years ago, setting out to answer the question:  how can we effectively engage people with climate change?

Decades of scientific consensus, international summits and traditional environmental campaigns weren’t mobilising society to take action. So in 2004, George Marshall and Richard Sexton co-founded the Climate Outreach and Information Network (COIN) to educate and inform people about climate change.

Since the founding of Climate Outreach, things have changed significantly. There is now a large body of social science research, including that of Climate Outreach itself, that reveals how to communicate effectively about climate change.   Climate Outreach makes sure that this valuable research doesn’t just stay in reports that few people read, by guiding practitioners on how to apply these evidence-based insights to their work.

Every year Climate Outreach helps hundreds of organisations think about how they can tell a different climate story. They do this through research and advice, workshops and training, and Climate Visuals.

Discover what Rachel and Climate Outreach have learned about how we can re-write the climate story.

Presenter(s) Bio

Rachael is the CEO of Climate Outreach. She works closely with the board to ensure effective governance and growth of the organisation and with our senior leaders in defining and delivering the organisation’s overall strategy, goals and impact.

Rachael has spent her career in the voluntary sector in leadership roles combining a deep commitment to social justice and to public engagement. She has run campaigns for Shelter, led programme and campaigning work at Oxfam and currently serves as Chair of Trustees at the Refugee Council.

It was in her last role, leading a network of housing associations, that Rachael really appreciated the huge gap in public awareness and engagement on climate change – and the huge opportunity to fill this gap. Housing, like many sectors, is in a race to decarbonise, and the sector is still really developing its approach to community, resident and public engagement. Rachael firmly believes that Climate Outreach is uniquely placed to help many sectors fill this gap.

Rachael is a mum to two young children so most of her spare time is spent playing schools or superheroes – and tidying up. She spends any time she gets to herself running, cycling and going to the theatre.
