Political Pod Shaping Tomorrow Book Circle, Step 6, The Power of Storytelling
To complete our journey through the Shaping Tomorrow Playbook, Fiona Anderson will lead a session on Thursday 11 Sept on Step 6, The Power of Storytelling (p78-85).
Her guest is Vicky Whitworth, a Rivers Champion, who started by monitoring the health on her local river, the Kit Brook in East Devon, a tributary of the River Axe.
From an HR background, Vicky’s learned far more science than she ever expected about water monitoring, farm run offs and sewage. But she knows the value of storytelling to engage the public and politicians alike in her mission to make our rivers better.
We’ll focus on how to use storytelling to inspire and connect.
Can we help politicians and activists communicate intricate issues and policies through a compelling narrative? How do they bring alive a complex story so people tune in not out?
How can we help our clients create positive visions of what a sustainable society might look like and how we might get there?
Can we bring in personal experiences to connect better, sharing what moves and motivates us?

Fiona Anderson
Fiona is a climate coach and writes the Climate Coaching Alliance Political Pod monthly newsletter. She works with local politicians and climate activists in Devon and Dorset. She worked as a journalist for over 30 years, including TV news production at BBC Newsnight and the BBC's Asia and Washington bureaux. She trained as a coach in 2002, her favourite work as a coach was through Common Purpose with conservationist leaders faced with climate change around the Mediterranean. Vicky Whitworth
Vicky spent 40 years working in human resource management in roles she describes as dehumanising and dispiriting, finishing her career as HR Director for a UK national addiction charity. A stint at ethical retailer The Body Shop in the 1990s working alongside Anita Roddick showed her that there are other ways to effect change. Once retired, Vicky was a woman looking for a cause, and the despicable state of English watercourses galvanised her into throwing her leadership, communication and energising skills into making things better for her local rivers.
