In our current times there is an accelerating climate crisis. Millions of people are becoming aware of climate problems because the problems are directly affecting their lives. Events occurring in their geographical area or frequent media coverage of the climate events elsewhere are becoming a normal part of their daily life. Ecological anxiety is affecting many people of all ages, and they are seeking ways in which they can understand how their thinking, feeling, and behavior can be re-established with the positivity of their earlier years.

One successful opportunity is the expression of feelings in Zoom meetings with like-minded people struggling with the same concerns. This eco-engaging training goes beyond expressing feelings towards action plans that transform both feelings and the thinking/behavior related to them.

The ideas come from Pierre-Eric Sutter, a man who spent several years conducting thousands of interviews with people who had become completely demoralized after learning about collapsology by reading How Everything Can Collapse (P. Servigne) in 2015. Sutter is an existential therapist and noticed that many of the demoralized people were able to transform their state of being into positivity and happy living despite the collapses they witnessed around them (climate, diversity, democracy, politics, supply chains, etc.), collapses which continue today. After careful study over several years, he wrote a book in 2020 called Don’t Be Afraid of Collapse (N’ayez pas peur du collapse), which is currently only available in French.

I have spent half a year reading, studying, and outlining the book, and I would like to share his successful worldview with others in the English-speaking world.

After this initial training, I would like to continue monthly meetings on this topic throughout 2023.

Presenter(s) Bio

Robert Bell is a former elementary, middle school, and high school teacher. He was credentialled to teach Life Science students, Behavior Disordered students, Emotionally Disturbed students, Learning Handicapped students, and Hmong students over a period of 26 years. The students' ages ranged from 8 years old to 17 years old.

He is involved in the Climate Coaching Alliance Education Pod. This training, however, is targeted primarily towards adults. The concepts of existential psychology which are central to this presentation can later be simplified and targeted towards our youth, who ultimately will carry the greatest burden of ecological anxiety. However, by transforming their thinking, feeling, and acting, people of all ages will be able to face the climate emergency with active optimism.
